About
Welcome to the studio
Christopher Larry is a mixed-media artist working from Cape Town, South Africa.
The practice
I build from what the city throws away. Wire from a fallen fence, timber from a demolished deck, paint left over from another painting — none of it is chosen for its beauty. It is chosen because it already carries a history.
The work begins as an armature: something rough that has to stand up, hang or hold a weight. From there, surfaces are collaged, painted, torn back and rebuilt until the object stops being materials and starts being a presence. Portraits emerge from newsprint and ink. Figures rise out of fencing wire. Scrap becomes anatomy.
The studio keeps its own schedule. Some works take a week; others have been in progress for years and are allowed to finish in their own time. Nothing leaves Cape Town until it is documented, signed and certified — and until the artist is certain it can stand on its own.
Original works, limited print editions and a small number of commissions are released through this site. Studio visits can be arranged by appointment.
How the studio works
Found materials
Wire, offcut timber, cloth and paint — salvaged around Cape Town and given a second working life.
Built by hand
No moulds, no editions of originals. Every armature is twisted, bound and finished in the studio.
Emotion first
The work is finished when it holds a feeling — not when it matches a sketch.
Documented
Each piece is photographed, catalogued and issued with a signed certificate of authenticity.
“Every piece begins with what's found and ends where it must: at feeling.”
